Future Homes & Building Standards
England - 24 March 2027
The Future Homes and Buildings Standards introduce significant changes to Part L and Part F of the Building Regulations Approved Documents.
New homes will generally require:
- low-carbon heating such as heat pumps (rather than gas boilers)
- solar PV (Photovoltaics Panels).
- improved energy efficiency.
- updated ventilation requirements.
Commercial / Non-domestic buildings
New non-domestic buildings will also face tighter energy and carbon standards.
Transitional arrangements
Transitional arrangements apply to qualifying applications submitted before commencement, provided work starts within the permitted period.
Wales - 4 March 2027
Revised Part L and Part F introduce:
- stronger energy efficiency.
- low-carbon heating.
- ventilation requirements for new buildings.
- increased use of renewable energy such as solar PV.
The Welsh requirements differ from England's and have separate technical guidance and transitional arrangements.
Existing dwelling extensions and alterations should be considered separately from new-build requirements.
